What is the Medical Services Project?

The Arizona Department of Health Services fund the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics to administer the Medical Services Project.

The Medical Services Project provides access to health care for uninsured children from low income families who do not qualify (or are in the process of qualifying) for the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) or KidsCare. The goal of the Medical Services Project is to increase access to health care for Arizona's uninsured children. School nurses identify children who meet the Medical Services Project's eligibility criteria. The children are referred to participating health care providers who have agreed to accept a predetermined fee of $5.00 or $10.00 as payment in full for each office visit. Specialists have also joined the Medical Services Project. Children may receive free diagnostic laboratory services, prescription medication and eyeglasses through the Medical Services Project.

Is my child eligible for the Medical Services Project?

If your child has an acute or episodic illness, he or she may see a doctor through the Medical Services Project if he or she is eligible for the free or reduced school lunch program. Also, in order to be eligible for the Medical Services Project, your child cannot qualify for AHCCCS or KidsCare. Medical Services Project is not available in all communities. Ask your child's school nurse if she or he participates in the Medical Services Project.

If my child is sick, how can my child see a doctor through the Medical Services Project?

The only way a sick child can be referred to the Medical Services Project is through a school nurse, public health nurse or Head Start program. Not all communities participate in the Medical Services Project.

  • If your child is in school, ask your school nurse if your community participates in the Medical Services Project.
  • If your school age child has a younger brother or sister, ask your school nurse if your community participates in the Medical Services Project for younger siblings.
  • If your child is in Maricopa County Head Start, ask Head Start if they participate in the Medical Services Project.
  • If your child is in Mohave or Pima County, ask a public health nurse if they participate in the Medical Services Project.
